Western Comedy Subgenre: A Frontier of Hits and Misses The Western comedy subgenre has produced both timeless classics like "Blazing Saddles" and forgotten failures like "Wild Wild West". Chris Farley and Matthew Perry's "Almost Heroes" is one such movie that failed to capture audiences, despite its star power and director Christopher Guest's reputation, now sitting alongside other poorly received Western comedies in cinema history. The Western comedy is a frontier-fronted subgenre with results scattered all over the place. Rip-roaring laughfests like Mel Brooks' "Blazing Saddles", "Three Amigos! ", and the Mel Gibson vehicle "Maverick" rode off into the sunset as classic hoedowns viewers could partake in time and time again, regardless of whether they were instant successes or cult classics. Other films, like Will Smith's steampunk Western "Wild Wild West", based on the classic TV series of the same name, and Kevin Costner's "Wyatt Earp" parody "Pocahontas and the White Squaw", were also met with mixed reviews and are now considered buried in the dust of film history.Unfortunately, another attempt at Western glory, the Chris Farley and Matthew Perry movie "Almost Heroes", met the same fate as the latter projects, and resides with a slew of other forgotten Western comedies up on Boot Hill.
