West Suburban Medical Center Closure and Financial Troubles
West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park has temporarily closed its doors due to significant financial difficulties and an ongoing foreclosure process. The hospital’s owner, Resilience Healthcare, is working to resolve the issues and anticipates a potential reopening by July.
Millions in Unpaid Aid and Mounting Debt
State leaders report that West Suburban Medical Center failed to repay over $30 million in advance payments intended to support operations and staff salaries. The hospital now faces more than $70 million in debt owed to the state, in addition to substantial unpaid bills and property taxes.
Foreclosure and State Monitoring
The hospital building is currently in foreclosure, and unpaid taxes are being sold. State Representative La Shawn Ford stated the state is closely monitoring the situation to ensure patient safety. “Daily meetings with leadership at the hospital, monitoring staff levels, and making sure patients are safely transferred,” Ford said.
Root Causes and Remedial Actions
Dr. Manoj Prasad, CEO of Resilience Healthcare, explained that many of the problems predate his acquisition of the hospital during bankruptcy in 2022. He cited an inherited failed billing system as a primary contributor to the financial crisis.
Billing System Failure and Recovery Efforts
According to Dr. Prasad, the faulty billing system resulted in the hospital collecting only approximately ten percent of its normal revenue. His team has since identified and addressed the billing issue, implementing new systems to accurately track charges and submit claims. A paper-based backup system has also been established.
Dr. Prasad claims these changes are already contributing to the recovery of millions in lost revenue. He remains optimistic about reopening West Suburban Hospital by early July.
Future Outlook
The hospital’s future hinges on the success of the new systems and the implementation of a viable financial plan. State officials will continue to oversee patient transfers and safety protocols during this period.
