Wembanyama Reiterates MVP Ambitions
San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama emphatically stated his desire to win the NBA’s Most Valuable Player award following a stellar performance on Wednesday night. Wembanyama scored 41 points and grabbed 18 rebounds in a decisive victory against the Golden State Warriors.
Driven by a Desire to Join the Elite
“I do care deeply about it,” Wembanyama told ESPN. He believes that pursuing accolades early in his career is crucial to establishing himself among the NBA’s all-time greats. “I think that of the greats that are in the Hall of Fame -- or the best of all time -- they have fought and grabbed everything they could grab early on in their career.”
Spurs on a Winning Streak
The Spurs have won 10 consecutive games overall, and have a remarkable 15-game winning streak in games where Wembanyama has played. During this impressive run, the rookie has averaged 27.9 points and 12.3 rebounds per game.
Dominating the Boards
Wembanyama has recorded at least 15 rebounds in five straight games, marking the longest such streak for a Spurs player in recent memory. This recent success has propelled San Antonio into contention for the top seed in the Western Conference.
Chasing the Thunder
Currently, the Oklahoma City Thunder hold a two-game lead over the Spurs with six games remaining. However, San Antonio owns the head-to-head tiebreaker, having won four of their five matchups against the Thunder. Oklahoma City, led by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, is also playing exceptionally well, winning 15 of their last 16 games.
Defensive Prowess Recognized
Even if Wembanyama doesn’t secure the MVP award, he is widely considered the frontrunner for the Defensive Player of the Year award. Prior to Wednesday’s game, Warriors coach Steve Kerr lauded Wembanyama as “obviously the best defensive player in the league.”
Kerr Praises Wembanyama's Growth
Following the game, Kerr continued to praise Wembanyama’s development. “He’s got unbelievable confidence now,” Kerr said. “He looks like he knows exactly what to do on both ends…He doesn’t look young anymore. He just looks like he knows exactly what he’s doing.” Kerr also highlighted Wembanyama’s dominance on the glass, comparing some of his plays to shooting on a Nerf hoop.
