‘Weapons’ Prequel Officially in Development
New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. are moving forward with active development on a prequel to the critically acclaimed horror film Weapons. The project will center around the character of Aunt Gladys, portrayed by Academy Award winner Amy Madigan.
Zach Shields Joins Writing Team
The studio has enlisted Zach Shields, known for his work in the ‘Monsterverse’ franchise, to co-write the screenplay with Zach Cregger, who wrote and directed the original Weapons. The working title for the prequel is currently reported as Gladys.
Exploring Aunt Gladys’ Origins
Weapons explores the unsettling disappearance of an entire school class, leaving only one child behind. The story is told through multiple perspectives as the community grapples with a growing supernatural threat. The prequel will delve into the origins of Aunt Gladys, the witch at the heart of the mystery and the orchestrator of the disappearances.
Amy Madigan on a Potential Prequel
Following her Best Supporting Actress win at the Academy Awards for her role in Weapons, Amy Madigan briefly discussed the possibility of a prequel. She stated, “Zach Cregger, who’s our writer/director, he kind of says, ‘Yes, this is going to happen,’ but we know how long stuff takes… But if it worked out, that would be great because I trust Zach, and he’s got a lot of wacky ideas.”
Recent Accolades and Future Projects
Madigan’s Oscar win was a significant achievement for the horror genre and marked a record-breaking 40-year gap between her Academy Award nomination for 1985’s Twice in a Lifetime and her recent win. She also received an Actor Award from SAG for her performance in Weapons.
Zach Cregger is also working on a Resident Evil reboot for Sony, scheduled for release in September. Zach Shields has recently worked on various TV and theater projects before joining the Weapons prequel.
