‘Weapons’ Prequel Officially Greenlit
Following Amy Madigan’s recent Oscar win, Zach Cregger’s Weapons prequel movie is moving forward with development. The original film became a breakout success, earning $270 million worldwide on a $38 million production budget.
Aunt Gladys: From Enigma to Origin Story
Audiences were captivated – and terrified – by Madigan’s portrayal of Aunt Gladys, a performance that quickly established the character as a modern horror icon. Cregger and Zach Shields will co-write the prequel script, currently working with the title Aunt Gladys.
Early Ideas and Development
The idea of exploring Aunt Gladys’ backstory isn’t new. Cregger initially included a chapter dedicated to Gladys’ origins in the original Weapons script, but ultimately cut it. He felt the character’s mystery was more effective within the context of the first film. However, he always intended to revisit her story if the opportunity arose.
Expanding a Deleted Chapter
The prequel will reportedly build upon the narrative of the deleted chapter. The challenge lies in expanding a short segment into a full-length feature. Fans have long been curious about Gladys’ past, including her connection to witchcraft and any potential familial ties to Alex Lilly.
Creative Collaboration and Future Plans
Cregger has established himself as a prominent voice in the horror genre. He is currently working on another film, but will collaborate with Shields to develop the Aunt Gladys prequel in the meantime. During the development of the first film, Cregger asked Madigan to decide if Gladys should be portrayed as a normal person or a supernatural entity.
The Risks of Prequels
Prequels often face the challenge of potentially diminishing the mystique of the original work. It remains to be seen if fans will embrace a detailed backstory for Aunt Gladys, but Cregger’s creative track record suggests he is prepared to navigate this challenge.
