Governor Bob Ferguson officially signed a new bill on Monday that significantly expands the scope of legal sports betting within Washington State. This legislation now permits wagers to be placed on collegiate athletic events at tribal casinos across the state.
Expansion of Legalized Sports Wagering
Previously, Washington’s sports betting framework only allowed wagers on professional sports, esports, and Olympic competitions. The newly signed bill extends these allowances to include college athletics, while maintaining existing restrictions.
Crucially, the law maintains the prohibition on placing bets on any minor league sports, such as those involving the Tacoma Rainiers. This clarification aims to streamline the regulatory environment for tribal gaming operations.
Industry and Legislative Support
Rebecca George, the executive director of the Washington Indian Gaming Association, welcomed the measure. She stated that the bill reinforces a successful regulatory model while respecting tribal sovereignty.
George emphasized the importance of this clarity, noting, “At a time when new products are trying to blur the lines around what is and isn’t gambling, Washington is choosing clarity.” The bill, known as Senate Bill 6137, will take effect 90 days following the adjournment of the legislative session.
New Protections Against Harassment and Betting Restrictions
The legislation incorporates strong legal protections aimed at safeguarding participants in college sports. State Sen. Adrian Cortes highlighted the necessity of these measures amid rising online harassment.
“During a time when online hate and harassment are on the rise, it’s more important than ever that we protect student athletes by properly regulating sports betting on college sports in our state,” Sen. Cortes commented on Monday.
Bans on Prop Bets and Anti-Harassment Provisions
State Representative Chris Stearns successfully advocated for two key amendments to the bill. These additions strengthen protections for student-athletes, coaches, and officials against threats.
Furthermore, the amendments introduce a comprehensive ban on proposition bets involving participants. This includes wagers on specific player statistics, in-game coaching decisions like timeouts or substitutions, and officiating rulings such as fouls.
Rep. Stearns explained the rationale behind these restrictions on social media on March 10: “Sports betting should never put athletes or officials at risk. These changes help protect the integrity of the game and the people who make sports possible.”
Any individual who issues a threat against a coach or official involved in a Washington athletic event could now face gross misdemeanor charges under the new law.
