Washington County Sheriff Resigns After Allegations Washington County Sheriff Nate Brooksby resigned and announced his retirement following a meeting with county commissioners addressing complaints about operations. Brooksby denied wrongdoing. The DA's Office is overseeing the transition, including selecting an interim sheriff. The Washington County District Attorney’s Office said Sheriff Nate Brooksby submitted his resignation hours after meeting with the commissioners’ office to address “a few different allegations.”“The commissioners received complaints about some of the operations of the Sheriff’s Office, and they did discuss those with Sheriff Brooksby,” said Courtney Sinagra with the DA’s Office. “Sheriff Brooksby denied any wrongdoing. He disagreed with the concerns that were raised and ultimately decided to retire after 30 years in law enforcement.”*“The complainants asked that the matter not be pursued further, so the commissioners were respecting that,” she said. “At the Washington County Attorney’s Office, we were focused on overseeing the process of transition and selecting an interim sheriff and making sure that the county continued to run smoothly and our citizens were served.” The DA’s Office said Sheriff Brooksby “didn’t necessarily receive a severance for his departure, but he did receive his already approved salary.” Sinagra said the office would continue to follow internal policies and procedures for proper practices in the Sheriff’s Department. She added that the department had “shown leadership in taking complaints seriously, so they would continue to listen to anything that was brought to their attention.” “I appreciate Sheriff Brooksby’s leadership and wish him all the best with his hard-earned retirement.
