Moses Moody's Recovery Timeline

Golden State Warriors guard Moses Moody is facing a lengthy rehabilitation process after undergoing a procedure late last week. The recovery is expected to take between nine and twelve months.

Optimism Despite the Challenge

Despite the significant time commitment, Moody is approaching his recovery with a positive attitude. “Every challenge I’ve been through in life I’m glad I went through. I’m sure I’ll feel the same about this,” Moody stated.

Expert Advice: Avoiding Re-Injury

Ryan Kennelly, a sports physical therapist at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, emphasized the need for patience in Moody’s recovery. “This is not something that you want to rush him back from,” Kennelly told the Bay Area News Group. He explained that returning to play too early is the leading cause of re-injury, potentially setting an athlete back even further.

Benefits of Early Surgery

Timely Intervention

Kennelly highlighted the benefit of Moody undergoing surgery soon after the initial injury. This quick action prevented the torn tendon from retracting and shortening, which could have complicated the recovery process.

Rehabilitation Stages

Initial Phase: Bracing and Range of Motion

Following surgery, Moody’s knee will be immobilized in a brace to allow the tendon to heal. The initial focus will be on regaining the ability to bend and straighten his knee, with limited weight-bearing.

Progressing Towards Full Weight-Bearing

Kennelly outlined the next steps: “He might be out of the brace, and the first goal is to restore proper gait mechanics, making sure that he can walk normally, and that he’s able to straighten his knee out fully when he walks. Can he tolerate what we call full weight bearing on that leg without any pain or issues?”

Age and Medical Support as Advantages

Youthful Healing

Kennelly noted that Moody’s age – 23 – is a significant advantage. “What benefits him is that he’s 23 years old, so he’s got youth on his side from a healing standpoint,” Kennelly said. Younger tendons are generally more resilient and heal more effectively.

Strong Medical Team

The Golden State Warriors’ medical staff is also expected to play a crucial role in Moody’s successful recovery.

Tempering Expectations

Return to Form

Even with a successful recovery, Kennelly cautioned fans to temper their expectations regarding Moody’s immediate performance upon his return. It may take time – potentially a year or two – for him to regain his previous form, including his 40.1% three-point shooting percentage.

“Sometimes athletes say, even though you get back to playing in a year’s time, it’s that next year, in that one- to two-year range, where they get back to feeling like themselves,” Kennelly explained.
