Vice President JD Vance has announced the upcoming release of a new book, Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith. The 304-page memoir is scheduled for release in late spring and reflects deeply on his personal spiritual journey.
A Rare Move for a Sitting Vice President
It is unusual for a sitting vice president to publish a book they have personally authored during their term in office. Vance's predecessors, including Mike Pence and Kamala Harris, both released their books after leaving their respective roles.
Content of the New Memoir
Vance, 41, stated that he has been working on this book since 2019. Communion will cover his conversion to Catholicism and offer insights into his experiences within the political arena.
Vance shared his excitement, announcing, “I’ve been writing this book for a long time, and I’m honored to finally be able to share the full story with you all.” He emphasized that the book centers on his personal path: “Communion is about my personal journey and how I found my way back to faith.”
The Journey Back to Faith
The Vice President, who was raised Protestant and later became an atheist before converting to Catholicism in 2019, explored the reasons behind his spiritual shift. He noted, “The story of how I regained my faith, of course, only happened because I had lost it to begin with.”
Vance reflected on the deeper questions surrounding his past beliefs: “The interesting question that hangs over this book, and over my mind, is why I ever strayed from the path. Why the Christian faith of my youth failed to properly take root. I’m glad I found my way back to the Church. I learned much along the way.”
Previous Success and Political Context
Vance is partnering again with HarperCollins Publisher, the same house behind his 2016 bestseller, Hillbilly Elegy. That book detailed his challenging upbringing in Appalachia with a mother struggling with addiction and sold over 3 million copies, later becoming a 2020 film directed by Ron Howard.
Following the success of his first book, Vance successfully ran for the Ohio Senate seat, leading to his selection as Vice President by President Trump. While other prominent figures speculated as 2028 presidential hopefuls—including Harris, Gavin Newsom, Josh Shapiro, and Andy Beshear—have released or plan to release books, Vance has publicly stated his current focus remains on the 2026 midterm elections.
Recent Public Statements
Vance recently discussed reconciling his Catholic beliefs with the Trump administration's immigration policies during an episode of 'Pod Force One.' This discussion followed earlier criticism from some religious leaders regarding those policies.
