Artemis II Launch Draws Crowds in Utah
Four astronauts are currently en route to the moon, and many Utah residents gathered to celebrate the launch at a viewing party held at the Clark Planetarium in Salt Lake City on Wednesday.
A Multi-Generational Event
Space enthusiasts of all ages came together to watch the Artemis II launch in vivid color on the planetarium’s large IMAX screen. Attendees secured their seats on a first-come, first-served basis after collecting refreshments.
Witnessing History
The event provided a unique opportunity to witness a pivotal moment in space exploration: four astronauts embarking on a nearly 250,000-mile journey around the moon, with a total mission duration of almost a week.
Enthusiastic Attendees Share Reactions
Siblings Lang and Jefferson Summers from Taylorsville attended after seeing a poster on Instagram. “This was way cooler than I ever thought, it was super cool!” Lang Summers exclaimed.
Laurel Black, who attended with her two children, expressed her excitement about the timing of the event. “That’s why we love it here! As soon as we saw that we could, we just lined up, the stars aligned,” she said.
Reflections on Past and Future Missions
Kent Bell, a long-time space enthusiast, recalled watching the last lunar mission on a small, black-and-white television over five decades ago. He noted, “My big question is, why over 50 years since we’ve been to the moon? All the science fiction that I used to read projected that by 2000 we would have a moon base.”
Inspiring the Next Generation
Perhaps the most enthusiastic attendee was first-grader Lincoln Abbott, who described himself as a “space kid.” He shared his excitement, “But it was pretty cool seeing how like all of the things were like going off and all of the commands, yeah!”
Lincoln’s mother, Laurie Abbott, explained his lifelong passion for space. “He’s been a space junkie since as young as we can remember. He was obsessed with Saturn when he was two, any little ring he would turn into Saturn’s rings. And it’s just grown from there,” she said.
