The US Men’s National Team (USMNT) experienced setbacks in recent international friendlies, falling to Belgium 5-2 and Portugal 2-0. These matches served as a crucial assessment as the team prepares for this summer’s World Cup.

Wake-Up Call Against Top Competition

Despite the losses, both the team and head coach Mauricio Pochettino remain optimistic. They emphasize the importance of competing against top European teams to identify areas for improvement, particularly in converting scoring opportunities. The two defeats were described as a “wake-up call” for the USMNT and their World Cup aspirations.

Pochettino's Perspective on Improvement

“Even if it's painful, it's the only way to improve. It's the only way to learn. It's the only way to see how these top players and teams compete,” Pochettino stated on Tuesday. He expressed increased positivity, believing the team is close to reaching its potential with only minor adjustments needed.

Analyzing the Matches

The USMNT showed promise in the first half against Belgium, successfully moving the ball and creating scoring chances. Weston McKennie scored off a corner kick from Antonee “Jedi” Robinson, but Pochettino noted the team should have scored more goals.

However, the inability to capitalize on these opportunities proved costly in both games. Belgium and Portugal demonstrated greater efficiency in finishing when presented with chances against the American defense. U.S. defender Auston Trusty highlighted the value of facing such high-level competition, stating, “To see competition at that level, and also the ruthlessness of the finishing, that’s a positive takeaway, because you can see it.”

Formation and Defensive Concerns

Pochettino has experimented with different formations during his tenure, initially using a 4-2-3-1 and then a 3-4-2-1. Against Belgium and Portugal, he reverted to a four-defender formation, testing seven different starters. Concerns remain regarding the depth of World Cup-caliber defenders, with players like Ream aging and others lacking experience.

Pochettino stressed the need for intensity, stating, “Because if ‘We are not aggressive Saturday, we are not aggressive tomorrow, because, no, in the World Cup we are going to be aggressive’ — no. You cannot be aggressive if you do not create reality.”

Injury Updates and Future Outlook

The team is hopeful for the return of key players from injury. Johnny Cardoso experienced leg discomfort and withdrew from camp, while Sergiño Dest is recovering from a hamstring injury. Antonee Robinson has successfully returned from a knee injury, expressing relief at regaining his fitness.

Upcoming Schedule

The USMNT will continue their preparations with an international friendly against Senegal on May 31 in Charlotte, N.C. They will then begin their World Cup group stage campaign on June 12 against Paraguay in Los Angeles.
