American soccer players are experiencing a period of intense anticipation as they await coach Mauricio Pochettino’s final 26-man World Cup roster announcement.
The Weight of Expectation
The announcement, scheduled for May 26th in New York, has created a palpable sense of anxiety among players competing for a spot. Those who are not selected will not receive a personal phone call, adding to the pressure. “It’s going to be painful,” Pochettino acknowledged.
Pochettino explained the difficulty of the selection process, stating, “In that process, always you create links, no, emotional links, but it’s going to be difficult to pick 26 from 35, 40 players.”
Recent Performances and Potential Roster Locks
Twenty-four players featured in recent friendlies against Belgium (5-2 loss) and Portugal (2-0 loss). A total of 38 players have been involved in the last eight matches dating back to September.
Confirmed Players
Twelve players are considered likely to be included on the roster if they remain healthy. These include goalkeepers Matt Freese and Matt Turner, defenders Sergiño Dest, Tim Ream, and Chris Richards, midfielders Tyler Adams, Weston McKennie, and Malik Tillman, and attackers Christian Pulisic, Timothy Weah, and forward Folarin Balogun.
Players in Contention
Approximately two dozen other players are still in contention for a place, including goalkeepers Chris Brady, Patrick Schulte, and Jonathan Klinsmann, and a range of defenders, midfielders, and forwards. These players will be focused on their club commitments as the May 26th deadline approaches.
Focus on Club Play and Remaining Optimism
Defender Auston Trusty emphasized the importance of concentrating on club commitments, stating, “Hopefully that time when with Celtic we’re playing Cup final. That’s the only thing I’ll be focusing on.”
Despite recent losses, midfielder Weston McKennie remains optimistic. “I think we’re heading in the right direction,” he said. “I think obviously it’s hard to say that we’re where we want to be with results like this, but I think that we take a lot of positives away from the games that we played. We see that we can keep up. I think we just need to figure out how to be able to stay in the game if we don’t finish chances that we have early on.”
Addressing Concerns
Christian Pulisic has experienced a recent scoring drought, with no goals in his last eight national team games and 12 matches for AC Milan. Former player Clint Dempsey believes Pulisic simply needs a goal to regain his form: “He just needs one to go in, get back on that wave. Everybody goes through a little bit of a slump.”
Pochettino cautioned against inflated expectations, noting the team’s recent results and the quality of opposition. “We are USA and we are competing against Belgium, Portugal,” he stated. “I think for sure Belgium and Portugal have in the top 100 players few or some players playing in that top 100. I think we don’t have.”
Looking Ahead to the Tournament
Pochettino is confident that three weeks of training before the World Cup opener against Australia on June 12 will allow him to address tactical issues. He expressed optimism, stating, “I am more positive now than before, because seeing the team compete, we are not far away. Is only details that we need to improve.”
Portugal coach Roberto Martínez cautioned against drawing firm conclusions from March friendlies, emphasizing the varying priorities of players at this stage of the season.
