A shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is occurring as the United States faces increasing security threats, including attacks on domestic soil. The situation is prompting calls for immediate congressional action to restore full funding and operational capacity to the department.
Recent Attacks Highlight Growing Concerns
On March 12, Ayman Ghazali, a naturalized citizen from Lebanon, intentionally drove a pickup truck into a synagogue in West Bloomfield, Michigan. More than 100 children were present inside with teachers and staff. The FBI later confirmed the incident was a terrorist attack. A security guard’s swift action prevented a potential massacre.
This attack was not isolated. Similar incidents occurred in March in New York City and at Old Dominion University in Virginia, signaling a potential increase in terrorist activity. With ongoing conflicts involving Iran and its proxies, officials anticipate further attacks.
DHS Operations Hampered by Shutdown
The DHS is currently operating with “essential employees” due to the shutdown, and these employees are not receiving pay. This impacts numerous agencies within the department, including the Transportation Security Agency, the Cyber and Infrastructure Security Agency, the Secret Service, and the Coast Guard.
The shutdown was initiated by Democrats, despite claims by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer that the target was Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). However, ICE and the Border Patrol are already fully funded and their employees are being paid.
Schumer's Role in the Impasse
Critics describe Schumer’s actions as a “dumb exercise in futility,” noting a pattern of unsuccessful political stunts. A photograph shows Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer speaking at a rally against the SAVE America Act outside the U.S. Capitol on March 18, 2026.
Call for Bipartisan Action
Despite political disagreements, many believe national security should be a priority. The current situation is considered a “deadly serious moment of peril,” and the DHS shutdown is seen as a significant risk. The need for a fully operational security force is paramount, regardless of political stance on the conflict with Iran.
Democrats could end the shutdown by securing seven votes to fund the DHS. Congressional Republicans are urged to act swiftly and overcome partisan divisions to address the immediate threat. The House and Senate Budget Committees should work towards a consensus budget that prioritizes defense spending, intelligence funding, and DHS operations.
Future Budget Considerations
The President will submit his budget for the next year, providing an opportunity for Congress to utilize the “reconciliation” process to finalize a budget before the summer recess. Despite disagreements over the filibuster, Republicans and Democrats should prioritize national security and act as if lives depend on their decisions.
Waiting for a successful attack to prompt action is unacceptable. The country cannot afford to continue tolerating what is described as the “childishness of the Democrats.” Immediate and decisive action from the GOP is crucial to protect national security.
