Abduction in Central Baghdad
Iraqi officials have confirmed the kidnapping of a female American journalist in central Baghdad. According to security sources, the incident occurred on Saadoun Street, prompting an immediate response from local authorities.
Two security officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, stated that the abduction involved two vehicles. An alert was quickly circulated to all security checkpoints, initiating a pursuit as the kidnappers fled southwest toward Babil province.
Security Forces Pursuit and Investigation
The Iraqi interior ministry released a statement confirming that security forces are currently conducting intensive field operations based on precise intelligence. During the pursuit near the town of Al-Haswa, one of the kidnappers' vehicles overturned.
Authorities successfully apprehended one suspect and seized the crashed vehicle at the scene. However, reports indicate that the journalist was transferred to a second vehicle, which managed to escape. Security forces are continuing their efforts to locate the remaining suspects and secure the journalist's safety.
U.S. Government Response
The U.S. State Department acknowledged the reports, stating that the safety of American citizens remains their highest priority. Due to privacy concerns, officials declined to provide further details regarding the ongoing situation.
The U.S. embassy in Iraq has previously issued warnings regarding kidnapping risks, urging American citizens to depart the country. These concerns follow a history of regional tensions, including the 2023 disappearance of a Princeton graduate student who was later released from captivity by the Iran-allied militia Kataib Hezbollah in September 2025.
