U.S. Crew Member Rescued From Iran
A U.S. crew member was successfully rescued by U.S. forces after an F-15E fighter jet was shot down over Iranian territory. The daring operation, which took place early Sunday morning local time, involved a large-scale deployment of military assets and personnel and faced enemy fire.
Rescue Confirmed by President Trump
President Trump confirmed the rescue in a Truth Social post, expressing his relief and praising the military's efforts. He stated he personally directed the deployment of a substantial force to retrieve the stranded officer. The pilot of the downed jet was previously rescued on Friday.
Details of the Rescue Operation
The rescued crew member, a highly respected Colonel, sustained injuries but is expected to recover. The downing of the F-15E, which carried a two-person crew, was attributed to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, who claimed responsibility. Photos circulating in Iranian media appeared to confirm the aircraft type.
Challenges Faced During the Mission
The rescue operation was complex and faced significant challenges. During initial recovery efforts for the pilot, a U.S. helicopter was struck by small arms fire, injuring crew members, but the helicopter landed safely. An A-10 Warthog participating in the search was also damaged by enemy fire, forcing its pilot to eject and subsequently be recovered.
Large-Scale Deployment of Forces
The operation involved hundreds of special operations forces, numerous warplanes, and helicopters. A firefight erupted between U.S. forces and Iranian troops as commandos closed in on the missing crew member. Fortunately, no U.S. personnel were killed or seriously wounded during the rescue.
Preventing Enemy Capture
The rescued officer was immediately flown to Kuwait for medical treatment. To prevent equipment from falling into enemy hands, two transport planes intended for evacuating rescue crews from a remote base in Iran were destroyed. Rescue commandos were evacuated using three additional aircraft.
CIA's Role in Intelligence and Deception
The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) played a critical role, providing crucial intelligence and executing a deception campaign. The CIA spread false information within Iran to mislead Iranian forces and used its intelligence gathering capabilities to pinpoint the missing crew member’s location – hidden in a mountain crevice. Real-time location data was shared with the Pentagon and the White House.
Historical Significance of the Incident
Retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Houston Cantwell confirmed to The Associated Press that this marks the first time a U.S. fighter jet has been shot down in combat in over two decades. While four U.S. fighter jets have been downed since the beginning of the conflict, three were the result of friendly fire.
