US Embassy Issues Urgent Departure Warning for Americans in Iraq
The US Embassy in Baghdad is urging all American citizens to leave Iraq immediately, citing a credible threat of attacks within the next 24 to 48 hours. The warning, issued on Thursday, highlights the potential for strikes by Iran-allied Iraqi militias targeting US interests in the capital.
Potential Targets and Risks
According to a security alert posted on the embassy’s X (formerly Twitter) account, potential targets include Americans, companies, universities, diplomatic facilities, energy infrastructure, hotels, and airports. Iraqi institutions and civilian sites perceived to be linked to the United States are also considered at risk.
Militia Activity and Past Actions
The embassy noted that these militias have a history of targeting Americans, including instances of kidnapping. Citizens are strongly advised to depart the country “without delay.” The alert also states, “Do not travel to Iraq for any reason.”
Iraqi Government Limitations
The US Embassy expressed concern over the Iraqi government’s ability to prevent attacks originating from or occurring within its borders. The alert further indicates that some militia members may be affiliated with state institutions or possess official identification.
Regional Tensions and Background
The United States has accused certain Iraqi militant groups of maintaining ties with Iran and conducting attacks on US bases in the region. This warning comes amid escalating tensions following an air offensive by the US and Israel against Iran, beginning on February 28, resulting in over 1,340 fatalities, including the former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
Retaliatory Strikes and Regional Impact
Iran has responded with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military assets. These retaliatory actions have caused casualties, infrastructure damage, and disruptions to global markets and aviation.
