US Embassy: Americans Must Leave Iraq Immediately
The U.S. government has issued an urgent warning to American citizens in Iraq, advising them to “leave immediately” due to credible threats of imminent attacks. These threats are attributed to Iran-aligned terrorist militias operating within the country.
Imminent Threat of Attacks
U.S. officials believe Iraqi militia groups aligned with Iran may be planning attacks within the next 24 to 48 hours. Potential targets include locations associated with the United States, as well as civilian infrastructure throughout Iraq. This includes U.S. citizens, businesses, universities, diplomatic facilities, energy infrastructure, hotels, and airports.
Increased Risk of Kidnappings
The warning also highlights a heightened risk of kidnappings, as American citizens have been previously targeted by these militia groups. Recently, U.S. journalist Shelly Kittleson was kidnapped in Baghdad on April 1, 2026, allegedly by Kataib Hezbollah, an Iran-linked Iraqi militia.
Ongoing Efforts to Secure Journalist's Release
Iraqi security forces have launched an operation to arrest those involved in Kittleson’s kidnapping, arresting one suspect after a vehicle pursuit. The remaining kidnappers escaped with the journalist in another vehicle. Iraq’s Interior Ministry stated efforts are ongoing to secure her release and bring those responsible to justice.
Dylan Johnson, U.S. assistant secretary of state for public affairs, posted on X: “The State Department previously fulfilled our duty to warn this individual of threats against them, and we will continue to coordinate with the FBI to ensure their release as quickly as possible.”
Challenges and Travel Options
U.S. officials acknowledge the Iraqi government’s limited ability to fully prevent terrorist activity within its borders. Some Iran-aligned militias may even pose as affiliated with Iraqi government forces, complicating identification. The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad and Consulate General in Erbil are operational under an ordered departure status, with non-essential personnel already relocated.
Despite the challenges, Americans are urged to depart immediately while exit routes remain open. Iraq’s airspace is currently closed, and commercial flights are not operating. However, overland routes to Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Türkiye remain available, though travelers should anticipate delays and changing conditions. Travel throughout the region remains uncertain.
The State Department has issued a Level 4: Do Not Travel warning for Iraq, stating: “Do not travel to Iraq for any reason. Leave now if you are there.” Officials emphasize that remaining in Iraq carries significant personal risk.
