Ukraine launched a series of drone strikes against Russian oil infrastructure on Sunday, targeting a key Baltic Sea port and tankers allegedly involved in evading sanctions. This action represents a significant escalation in Ukraine’s strategy to disrupt Russia’s energy revenue.
Ukrainian Strikes on Russian Oil Infrastructure
Targeting Primorsk and the ‘Shadow Fleet’
The attacks included a successful hit on Primorsk, a crucial oil loading port on the Baltic Sea operated by Russia’s state oil firm, Transneft. A fire broke out at the port, though authorities reported no immediate oil spill. Ukraine also targeted two tankers believed to be part of Russia’s ‘shadow fleet’ – vessels used to bypass international sanctions and price caps on Russian energy.
Zelenskyy Confirms Successful Strikes
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the destruction of military targets and substantial damage to oil port infrastructure. He specifically mentioned the disabling of a Russian carrier of Kalibr missiles and successful strikes against a Karakurt missile ship, a patrol boat, and additional ‘shadow fleet’ tankers near Novorossiysk.
Russian Retaliation and Escalation
Drone Attacks on Ukrainian Cities
Russia responded with drone attacks on Ukrainian territory, resulting in civilian casualties and damage to infrastructure. The Odesa region was hit overnight, tragically resulting in the deaths of two civilians and injuries to three others. Damage was reported to residential buildings and port infrastructure.
Casualties and Interceptions
Six individuals were wounded in the Dnipropetrovsk region, and a passenger bus carrying 40 children sustained damage, fortunately without any injuries. Near Moscow, a 77-year-old man was killed in the Volokolamsk area by a Ukrainian drone strike. Russian authorities claim to have intercepted and destroyed numerous drones targeting the Moscow region and the city itself.
Claims of Intercepted Drones
The Russian Defence Ministry reported downing 334 Ukrainian UAVs overnight, including those over occupied Crimea. However, the Ukrainian air force reported a massive overnight barrage of 269 drones and ballistic missiles launched by Russia, intercepting and destroying 249 drones, while some ballistic missiles and 19 drones did manage to hit 15 locations across the country.
The Intensifying Conflict
This exchange of attacks underscores the escalating nature of the conflict and the increasing reliance on long-range strike capabilities by both sides. Ukraine’s strategy of targeting Russian oil infrastructure aims to cripple a key source of revenue for the Kremlin. The situation remains highly volatile, with both nations demonstrating a willingness to engage in increasingly aggressive actions.
