A Ukrainian commander has been removed from their position following the emergence of images depicting soldiers suffering from extreme malnutrition and relying on rainwater and melted snow for survival.
Logistical Challenges Near Kupiansk
The incident highlights significant logistical difficulties faced by Ukrainian troops stationed near Kupiansk, in the north-eastern region of Ukraine. Soldiers defending territory along the left bank of the Oskil River endured harrowing conditions for approximately eight months.
Soldiers' Dire Condition
Disturbing images shared on social media by Anastasiia Silchuk, the wife of one of the soldiers, revealed the soldiers’ emaciated state – exhibiting visible ribcages and drastically reduced weight. They reportedly went for up to seventeen days without adequate food.
Desperate Measures for Survival
Ms. Silchuk detailed how the soldiers were forced to collect rainwater and melt snow to stay hydrated. She also stated that their pleas for assistance via radio communication were ignored or dismissed. Ivanna Poberezhnyuk, another relative, reported soldiers losing consciousness due to hunger, though her father was successfully evacuated.
Russian Interference with Supplies
The brigade acknowledged the logistical hurdles, attributing them to the proximity to enemy lines and intense Russian activity. Russian forces actively target and destroy supply drones carrying essential food, ammunition, and fuel, often prioritizing logistical disruption over direct military engagement.
Ukraine's Response and Future Plans
Ukraine has increased the use of unmanned ground robots for supply runs and casualty evacuations in vulnerable areas. The destruction of bridges near the Oskil River by Russian forces further exacerbated the situation, isolating troops on the left bank.
Positive Changes and Investigation
Following public outcry, the situation reportedly improved. The newly appointed commander contacted Ms. Silchuk’s husband, assuring him that the issues would be addressed. Her husband reported consuming more food in one sitting than he had in eight months, though cautiously due to reduced stomach capacity.
The Ukrainian military command has launched an investigation and confirmed a recent food shipment to the 14th Infantry Brigade. Plans are in place for an immediate evacuation of the soldiers, pending favorable conditions. Ms. Silchuk believes public exposure was crucial in prompting action and advocates for troop rotation and medical care.
