British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer indicated the UK will pursue closer relationships with the European Union following criticisms from the United States regarding the UK’s response to the conflict in Iran. Starmer framed this shift as being in the long-term national interest.
Brexit Reversal on the Horizon?
Starmer, who previously opposed Brexit, stated on Wednesday, “it is increasingly clear that as the world continues down this volatile path, our long-term national interest requires closer partnership with our allies in Europe and with the European Union.” This move suggests a potential realignment with the EU after Brexit, which some viewed as a return to the Anglosphere.
US-UK Relations Deteriorate
The shift in policy comes amid growing tensions with the US, particularly after President Donald Trump suggested the possibility of the United States leaving the NATO alliance. This was due to what he perceived as insufficient support from Britain and other allies in the context of the Iran situation. Starmer acknowledged the pressure to alter his stance but affirmed, “There’s been a good deal of pressure on me to change my position in relation to joining the war. And I’m not going to change my position on the war.”
Points of Contention
Relations between the two countries have demonstrably worsened. Despite securing favorable trade terms with the Trump administration, Starmer’s government has taken actions that have strained the “special relationship.” These include agreeing to transfer the British Indian Ocean Territory of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, a decision criticized by President Trump.
More recently, the UK rejected a US request to utilize joint bases for strikes against Iran and declined to assist in clearing mines from the Strait of Hormuz. This refusal was partially attributed to prior decommissioning of minesweeping vessels. Starmer echoed sentiments heard from Germany, stating the Iran conflict is “not our war.”
Iran's Response
Despite the UK’s stated neutrality, Iran has already launched attacks on British bases with drones and missiles, and has threatened further action. A statement from Iran indicated that further responses “depends on the British decision about this matter. Every option should be considered. We are very careful and delicate how to defend ourselves.”
