The British government has declared an “emergency” regarding a surge in antisemitism following a double stabbing in Golders Green and a series of related incidents across London.
Stabbing and Arson Attacks Spark Concern
A double stabbing in Golders Green, a predominantly Jewish area of north London, left two men, aged 34 and 76, seriously injured but in stable condition. A 45-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, and the incident is being treated as terrorism.
This attack is part of a broader escalation of antisemitic acts since the October 7th Hamas attack on Israel and the ensuing conflict in Gaza. Alongside the stabbing, there have been arson attacks targeting synagogues and Jewish sites, as well as attacks on opponents of the Iranian government.
Investigation into Potential Iranian Links
Authorities have made 28 arrests in connection with the arson attacks, with some facing charges and one teenager convicted. Investigations are underway to determine potential links to Iranian proxies.
A group calling itself Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia has claimed responsibility for several attacks, but authorities are treating these claims with caution, suspecting a possible false flag operation. The UK has previously accused Iran of using criminal proxies to target both Iranian opposition media and the Jewish community.
Intelligence reports suggest over 20 potentially lethal Iran-backed plots have been disrupted in the past year.
Government Response and Community Concerns
Prime Minister Keir Starmer was heckled during a visit to Golders Green, with protesters expressing dissatisfaction with the government’s response. The government has pledged 25 million pounds ($34 million) to enhance security measures for Jewish institutions.
These measures include increased police patrols and protection for synagogues, schools, and community centers. However, some within the Jewish community believe the government has been slow to address the growing atmosphere of antisemitism.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has stated that tackling antisemitism is her top security priority, and the government is committed to a swift criminal justice response.
