UCLA Men's Basketball Core to Remain Intact
The UCLA men’s basketball team is making strides in retaining key players for the upcoming 2026-27 season. Currently, three players have publicly announced their intention to return, with positive indications suggesting two more could follow suit.
Confirmed Returnees
Xavier Booker (center), Brandon Williams (forward), and Eric Freeny (guard) all confirmed to Bruin Report Online on Wednesday that they will be back for the 2026-27 season. These players represent a solid foundation for the team’s continued success.
Potential Additions
According to a source close to the program, guard Trent Perry and forward Eric Dailey Jr. are also leaning towards returning. Dailey’s return would likely position him as the starting power forward, a role that aligns with his strengths after starting last season as a small forward.
Team Strategy and Future Outlook
UCLA is planning to bolster its roster through the transfer portal, specifically targeting a strong starting center, a defensive wing player, and a starting-level guard. They will also seek quality reserves to add depth to the team.
Player Roles and Impact
Booker could see time as a spot starter at center, depending on matchups, while also providing support at the four and five positions. Freeny and Williams are expected to contribute significantly off the bench, building on their strong performance during the Bruins’ late-season run, which saw them win seven of their last ten games before falling to UConn in the NCAA Tournament.
Addressing Roster Needs
The team will need to address scoring gaps left by the departures of Tyler Bilodeau and Donovan Dent, their top two leading scorers. UCLA will also prioritize players with strong defensive and rebounding skills, areas where the team struggled last season.
Transfer Portal Strategy
With as many as six returning players, plus incoming freshmen Javonte Floyd and Joe Philon, Coach Mick Cronin and his staff are expected to be selective in the transfer portal. This allows them to focus on specific needs rather than a complete roster overhaul.
