Uber Nationwide EV Incentive
Uber is extending its “Go Electric” grant program nationwide, offering $4,000 to drivers who transition from internal combustion engine vehicles to electric vehicles (EVs). Previously, the $4,000 incentive was limited to drivers in California, Colorado, Massachusetts, and New York City.
Rising Gas Prices and EV Adoption
The expansion comes as gas prices have been steadily increasing since last month. Uber drivers are particularly affected by these rising costs, as fuel expenses directly impact their earnings. Despite this, many drivers remain hesitant to switch to EVs due to the recent elimination of federal incentives.
Grant Details and Application Process
Drivers interested in trading in their gasoline vehicles for eligible EVs can register on Uber’s website. Applications will begin to be processed on April 16th.
Uber’s EV Goals and Challenges
Uber currently has 286,000 EV drivers globally. However, this number falls short of the company’s ambitious goal to achieve carbon neutrality in North America and Europe by 2030, and globally by 2040. Initially, Uber had not planned to directly incentivize drivers to switch to EVs, but reversed course to accelerate adoption.
Shifting Incentive Strategies
The removal of federal tax credits – including the $7,500 incentive for new EVs and $4,000 for used ones – has presented a challenge to Uber’s EV transition plans. As a result, the company has adjusted its strategies, including discontinuing EV-specific bonuses and passenger fees earmarked for EV purchases.
Partnerships with Automakers
Uber is collaborating directly with automakers to offer discounts to drivers. Kia will provide exclusive discounts on its electric models, including $1,000 off the Niro and EV6, and $1,500 off the EV9. Additionally, Uber drivers purchasing through TrueCar can receive an extra $1,000 off a new or used EV.
