UAE Prepared to Assist US in Strait of Hormuz
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is prepared to support the United States in forcibly reopening the Strait of Hormuz, according to reports. This comes as tensions escalate following conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran.
UN Security Council Resolution
The UAE is currently lobbying the United Nations Security Council to pass a resolution authorizing a military operation aimed at ending Iran’s control over the vital trade route. If approved, the UAE would become the first Persian Gulf nation to directly join the conflict against Iran.
International Coalition Sought
Abu Dhabi is calling on European and Asian military powers to join a coalition to open the strait. The operation would also target Iranian-held territories claimed by the UAE, including Abu Musa. Bahrain, a close US ally hosting the Fifth Fleet, is sponsoring the UN resolution, with a vote anticipated on Thursday.
Strategic Importance of the Strait
Nations in the Gulf, Europe, and Asia have all emphasized the need to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, as it facilitates approximately 20% of the world’s oil supply. Iran effectively closed the strait to vessels it considers hostile after the US and Israel initiated military action against the Islamic Republic.
Trump's Stance and Oil Prices
President Trump has repeatedly demanded Iran reopen the waterway, particularly after a surge in oil prices. The US has requested assistance from its allies to open the strait by force, though other nations have expressed hesitation due to threats from Iranian mines and drones.
Escalating Attacks on the UAE
The UAE, a vocal critic of Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz, has experienced a significant increase in attacks from Tehran. On Tuesday alone, Iran launched nearly 50 ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones against the UAE, injuring at least four people in Dubai.
Disruptions to Air Travel
Repeated attacks near Dubai International Airport, a major global transportation hub, have led to reduced air traffic and a decline in tourism to the UAE.
