Two Singaporean hikers, Heng Wen Qiang Timothy, 30, and Shahin Muhrez bin Abdul Hamid, 27, were found dead near the crater rim of Mount Dukono on Halmahera island. Their bodies were retrieved on Sunday following a difficult rescue operation.
Hiking Group Enters Restricted Area
The group of hikers, which included Singaporeans, Indonesians, and others, was doing well until they entered a restricted hiking trail area. The trail was closed due to the risk of volcanic materials, according to the local rescue agency.
Challenging Rescue Operation
The search and rescue operation involved approximately 150 personnel. The efforts were hampered by continuous eruptions from the volcano. The two hikers were found buried under rock debris around the crater, highlighting the intense terrain and difficulty of the operation.
Survivors and Investigation
Fifteen members of the hiking group survived. Authorities are investigating possible negligence by tourism operators or individuals. The hikers had followed social media appeals to stay away from the hiking trail, but the trail had been officially closed.
