President Donald Trump announced significant details regarding a major construction project at the White House: a massive new ballroom situated directly above a highly secure underground facility. This development, revealed during a conversation aboard Air Force One on Sunday, is reportedly ahead of schedule.
The Dual-Purpose White House Expansion
A Secure Foundation Below
The core of the project is a substantial complex being constructed beneath the site of the former East Wing. President Trump emphasized that this underground structure is designed with maximum protection in mind.
He stated that the facility is engineered to be completely drone-proof and features bullet-resistant materials throughout. Trump noted the unfortunate necessity of such defenses, remarking, "unfortunately, we're living in an age where that's a good thing."
The Grand Ballroom Above
The new ballroom will serve as the protective covering for the secure facility underneath. Trump confirmed that the windows of the ballroom will also be constructed using thick, bullet-resistant glass.
The structure is intended to accommodate large events, including presidential inaugurations. "It's also capable of handling the inauguration," Trump stated, highlighting its multi-functional design.
Design and Scale of the New Structure
Architectural Homage and New Features
During a 20-minute discussion, Trump presented new renderings of the ballroom. He explained that the design pays close attention to the existing White House aesthetic, matching its height, style, and materials, including the use of Corinthian columns.
Exterior modifications were also detailed, such as the removal of the stairs on the south side. A new porch is planned for this area, offering views overlooking major national monuments.
Capacity and Funding Details
The planned ballroom is substantial, spanning 90,000 square feet, making it nearly double the size of the current White House. It is projected to have the capacity to host approximately 1,000 guests.
The estimated cost for this extensive project is roughly $400 million. President Trump confirmed that the entire expense will be covered through private donations, not taxpayer funds. He stressed the importance of the design, saying, "It pays total homage to the White House, which is, I think, very important."
President Trump Comments on Iran Tensions
Shifting focus, President Trump addressed the ongoing international conflict with Iran. He expressed cautious optimism regarding a potential diplomatic agreement.
However, he also issued a stern warning on Monday. Trump cautioned that if a settlement to end the conflict is not reached "shortly," Iran's critical facilities, including its energy infrastructure, could face widespread destruction.
