President Donald Trump is scheduled to attend the opening night performance of the musical “Chicago” at the Kennedy Center this Tuesday evening. This appearance could represent one of his final visits to the performing arts venue before it shuts down for extensive renovations starting in July.

A High-Profile Cultural Outing

The President will be accompanied by his wife, First Lady Melania Trump, for the event. This marks the first time the couple has attended an event together at the Kennedy Center since the premiere of the documentary “Melania” back in January.

Last summer, President Trump attended the opening night of “Les Misérables,” an event where he received both cheers and boos from the audience. The musical “Chicago,” which runs at the Kennedy Center Opera House through April 5, is noted as a sharp satire focusing on how media and show business elevate criminals to celebrity status in the 1920s setting.

Upcoming Events and Institutional Changes

The Kennedy Center is also slated to present the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor to comedian Bill Maher on June 28. It is possible that President Trump could attend this future ceremony.

Since returning to office in January 2025, the Republican president has significantly influenced the institution. He oversaw the removal of the previous leadership, replacing them with a handpicked board of trustees who subsequently named him chairman.

This new board approved the upcoming two-year closure for renovations. This decision followed numerous cancellations by prominent performers and groups who objected to Trump assuming control over the respected institution. Legal challenges regarding both the name change of the center and the planned closure are currently active.

Contrasting Weekend Activities

The President’s attendance at the show comes after the White House indicated that pressing international matters, including the war in Iran, prevented him from attending the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in suburban Dallas over the weekend.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated on Monday that scheduling conflicts, specifically due to CPAC being held in Texas, made it impractical for the President to attend this year. She emphasized that Trump “loves” the event and maintains a strong relationship with its organizers.

Instead of attending CPAC, President Trump spent the weekend at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida. Reports indicate he visited his golf club on both Saturday and Sunday.
