President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were applauded as they attended the opening night of “Chicago” at the Trump-Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. on March 31, 2026.
A Final Performance Before Renovations
This event marks one of the last public appearances at the national arts institution before it closes for a two-year renovation period in July. The acclaimed musical, a satire exploring the intersection of show business and media in creating celebrity, will run at the Trump-Kennedy Center Opera House through April 5.
Trump's Influence on the Kennedy Center
Since returning to office in January 2025, President Trump has significantly influenced the Kennedy Center. He recast the previous leadership, installing a board of trustees handpicked by him, and was subsequently named chairman.
Upcoming Events
The center is also scheduled to award the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor to comedian Bill Maher on June 28. President Trump may also attend this event.
Center Closure and Controversy
The decision to rename the center to the Trump-Kennedy Center and approve the two-year closure followed a series of cancellations by performers and groups. These cancellations were prompted by concerns over President Trump’s intervention in the institution’s affairs.
