Trump Spokesperson Clashes with CNN Host
Steven Cheung, a key spokesperson for Donald Trump, publicly criticized CNN host Abby Phillip after she questioned the substance of the former president’s recent address to the nation concerning the situation in Iran. Trump delivered the address on Wednesday evening, stating that the “core objectives” of his campaign against Iran were “nearing completion.”
Phillip’s Critique of Trump’s Address
Abby Phillip began her show by expressing skepticism about the information provided in Trump’s speech. She stated, “If you were looking for some new insights from the president about how this war is going, where it‘s headed, how exactly it might end, I‘m not sure that you got it today.” Phillip added that Trump largely repeated points previously made on his Truth Social platform.
Cheung’s Response on X
Cheung responded to Phillip’s commentary with a series of harsh criticisms on X (formerly Twitter). He wrote, “CNN has no sense at all,” and described Phillip as a “complete lightweight who has no idea what she is talking about on foreign policy.” Cheung also claimed her low ratings were evidence of her lack of credibility.
Ratings Data
However, data indicates that CNN was the network’s top performer in total viewers in February, with 908,000 viewers. Phillip’s show specifically ranked as the network’s No. 1 program among adults aged 24-54, attracting 187,000 viewers.
Further Scrutiny of Trump’s Claims
Phillip continued to challenge the administration’s narrative, questioning why Trump “can’t get his story straight on the nukes.” She highlighted inconsistencies in statements regarding Iran’s nuclear capabilities, noting that the administration has offered varying accounts. Despite previous strikes and “Operation Epic Fury,” Iran reportedly still possesses significant amounts of enriched uranium – approximately 1,000kg enriched to 20 percent and 8,500kg enriched to 3.6 percent.
Contradictory Statements
Phillip pointed out that Trump’s Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, testified before Congress that Iran’s nuclear enrichment program had been obliterated. Trump has echoed this claim, and the White House released a statement supporting it after strikes last June. However, Trump himself told Reuters that the enrichment of uranium was not a concern, stating, “That is so far underground, I don’t care about that,” despite initially citing preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons as a justification for the conflict.
Phillip Questions Long-Term Strategy
During his address, Trump suggested that, following strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, “it would take months to get near the nuclear dust.” Phillip expressed frustration with this statement, questioning whether the proposed strategy involved perpetually surveilling and bombing Iran if they attempted to rebuild their nuclear program. “Are we really going to just perpetually be poised to bomb Iran until the end of time?” she asked.
