Deadly Shooting Rocks Chicago's West Side

A tragic incident unfolded Monday night inside a residence on Chicago's West Side, leading to the deaths of two individuals. Police were alerted to the situation following reports of multiple people being shot.

The shooting occurred around 9:40 p.m. near the intersection of California Avenue and Washington Boulevard, situated within the East Garfield Park neighborhood. Officers arrived to find the aftermath of a severe altercation.

Escalation of Domestic Confrontation

According to initial police accounts, the violence began as an argument between two men inside the home. A 44-year-old man and a 31-year-old man were reportedly engaged in a fight.

The confrontation reportedly intensified when the older man allegedly used a sharp object to attack the younger man. This action prompted a deadly response from the 31-year-old.

Fatal Gunfire and Intervention Attempt

During the struggle, the 31-year-old individual drew a firearm and discharged multiple rounds. The 44-year-old victim was struck and subsequently transported to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Tragically, a 38-year-old woman attempted to step in and stop the violence. She was also shot in the head during the exchange and later succumbed to her injuries at the same medical facility.

Suspect in Custody and Ongoing Investigation

Police confirmed that the shooter, identified as a man who possesses a valid Firearm Owner Identification (FOID) card, was apprehended at the scene. Authorities also successfully recovered a weapon used in the incident.

As of Tuesday morning, the Cook County medical examiner's office had not yet released the official identities of the two deceased victims. Area Three detectives are actively leading the investigation, with charges currently pending against the detained individual.
