The Artemis 2 astronauts are on their way to the moon, and for the first time, the public has the opportunity to track their progress in real-time. Unlike past missions with limited updates, NASA is providing comprehensive data throughout the voyage.
How to Follow the Artemis 2 Mission
NASA’s Artemis Real-time Orbit Website (AROW) is the primary tool for tracking the mission. AROW allows users to visualize data collected by sensors on the Orion spacecraft and transmitted to Mission Control in Houston.
AROW Features
- Real-time Data: Track Orion’s distance from Earth and the Moon.
- Mission Duration: Monitor the length of the flight.
- Background Information: Explore details about the Moon and Apollo landing sites.
AROW will provide constant information beginning approximately one minute after liftoff and continuing through Orion’s atmospheric reentry.
AROW Mobile App & Augmented Reality
A mobile app version of AROW is also available, offering the same features as the website. It includes an augmented-reality tracker that uses your phone’s location to show where Orion is in relation to your position on Earth.
Historic Firsts on Artemis 2
This mission marks several historic milestones. Victor Glover will become the first African-American to travel beyond Low Earth Orbit (LEO). Christina Koch and Hiroyuki Hansen will be the first woman and first non-American, respectively, to achieve this feat.
Artemis 2 is a crucial test flight designed to validate Orion’s capabilities for supporting crewmembers during deep space missions. It represents a significant step in NASA’s ongoing efforts to expand space exploration.
