Tiger Woods is addressing his recent car crash and arrest, announcing he is taking time to “seek treatment.” The 50-year-old golf star released a statement on his Instagram story on Tuesday, March 31, acknowledging the seriousness of the situation.
Car Crash and DUI Charges
On March 27, Woods was involved in a rollover car crash in Jupiter, Florida, and subsequently charged with driving under the influence, property damage, and refusal to submit to a lawful test. He pleaded not guilty to the DUI charge and waived his arraignment, according to documents obtained by NBC News.
Statement on Seeking Treatment
“I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today,” Woods stated. “I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health.” He emphasized the necessity of prioritizing his well-being and working toward lasting recovery.
Woods expressed his commitment to returning as a “healthier, stronger, and more focused” individual, both personally and professionally. He requested privacy for himself, his family, and loved ones during this time.
Details of the Incident
According to Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek, Woods was driving a Land Rover on South Beach Road when he attempted to overtake another vehicle “at high speeds.” When the other driver slowed to turn into a driveway, Woods’ car swerved and clipped the back of a trailer, causing the vehicle to roll onto its side.
Woods was able to exit the vehicle through the passenger door and was not injured, nor was the other driver. Authorities determined Woods “did exemplify signs of impairment” after multiple tests.
Report Findings
A breathalyzer test reportedly showed Woods “blew triple zeroes,” but he refused a urinalysis. An incident report released on March 31 indicated Woods displayed “signs of impairment,” including bloodshot and glassy eyes, extremely dilated pupils, and profuse sweating. Opioid pain pills were also found in his pocket.
Woods told a deputy he was looking down at his cell phone and changing the radio station when he noticed the car in front of him had slowed down.
Support and Previous Incidents
The PGA Tour released a statement expressing support for Woods as he seeks treatment, emphasizing his health and well-being. Augusta National Golf Club also voiced its support, noting his presence would be felt at the Masters Tournament despite his absence.
This is not Woods’ first encounter with legal issues related to driving. He was previously arrested for a DUI in Florida in 2017, with a toxicology report revealing the presence of painkillers, sleep drugs, and marijuana in his system. He completed a diversion program in that case.
In 2021, Woods was involved in another single-car crash in Southern California, resulting in significant lower right leg injuries that required multiple surgeries. He was not charged in that incident.
