Tiger Woods is taking a break from professional golf to focus on treatment and recovery following his arrest for driving under the influence (DUI) in Florida.
DUI Arrest and Plea
Woods was arrested on Jupiter Island, Florida, last Friday after a rollover crash. He pleaded not guilty to the charges on Tuesday in Martin County, Florida, and plans to waive his appearance at the upcoming arraignment hearing next month.
Details from the Arrest Report
According to the arrest report released by the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, Woods had prescription medication, specifically opioid pills, on his person at the time of the incident. Deputies observed signs of impairment, including bloodshot and glassy eyes, dilated pupils, and slow, lethargic movements.
Woods reportedly told deputies he had taken prescription medication earlier in the morning and was adjusting his phone and radio before the crash. He clipped a truck, causing $5,000 in damage, and his vehicle rolled onto its side.
Woods' Statement
“I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today,” Woods said in a statement posted on social media. “I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery.”
He further stated, “I’m committed to taking the time needed to return in a healthier, stronger, and more focused place, both personally and professionally. I appreciate your understanding and support, and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones and myself at this time.”
Further Investigation
A Breathalyzer test showed no signs of alcohol in Woods’ system, but he refused a urine test. He was arrested and released on bail eight hours later. He is charged with driving under the influence with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test, with an arraignment scheduled for April 23.
Woods, 48, has a history of crashes and has undergone multiple surgeries, including seven on his back and over 20 on his legs. He previously faced a serious car crash in 2021 that nearly resulted in amputation of his right leg.
