Goodbye, Lara Is The Little Mermaid Anime Reboot Fans Didn't Know They Needed Goodbye, Lara is the newest anime series from Kinema Citrus. Made for the studio's 15th anniversary, the series is a retelling of The Little Mermaid short story by Hans Christian Andersen. Takushi Koide will be directing Goodbye, Lara and is known for past work in directing, key animation, and story boarding. Some of the previous works of Koide include Bocchi the Rock!, Made in Abyss, Revue Starlight's series, Revue Starlight The Movie, and the recent Cardfight!! Vanguard overDress alongside Cardfight!! Vanguard will+Dress. Lara is a mermaid princess who, after 200 years, resurfaces in modern day to meet and befriend a high school student. The titular mermaid has been warned of humans and their despicable nature, but this does not stop Lara from obtaining a potion from the witch Grace, and seeking out love in its truest form. The Little Mermaid's Anime History Goes Far Back The Little Mermaid short story by Hans Christian Andersen has been retold multiple times. The 1975 Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid film by Toei Animation, The Little Mermaid rendition by Walt Disney Feature Animation, and the recent live-action 2023 The Little Mermaid starring Halle Bailey. A literal fish-out-of-water story in more ways than one, but all renditions of this almost 190-year-old story take their own ideas and concepts to retell the story about a mermaid princess of the ocean searching for love. Themes of self-discovery, searching for true love, self-sacrifice, and combating the alienation of being from a different world are all at play for the character. By having the mermaid protagonist Lara intertwine herself in modern-day Japan, fans can see new opportunities and themes presented as Lara makes friends. Retelling a classic story is beneficial for recontextualizing core narratives and characters, and for adding new dynamics dependent on the setting. With close to 150,000 views of the first episode's trailer and over 2.5 million views of the teaser trailer, when announced several months ago, Goodbye, Lara seems to be grabbing fans of this new rendition of a prolific short story.
