'The Boys' Maintains a Separate Superhero Universe
The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke has clarified a key principle guiding the Prime Video series: a strict avoidance of referencing Marvel or DC Comics within the show’s universe. This decision is central to maintaining the show’s satirical edge and distinct reality.
Kripke on Blurring Reality and Superheroes
In a recent interview with ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley, Kripke explained the show’s approach to its canon. “It’s as absolutely real as possible is the answer,” he stated. “We really try to say it’s absolutely our world in every way we can, but it just happens to have superheroes in it, which f--ks it all up, obviously.”
The One Hard and Fast Rule
However, Kripke emphasized one firm boundary: “the only real hard and fast rule in the show are you’re not allowed to reference Marvel or DC.” He elaborated, “There’s no other superheroes in the world besides the Vought brand. So no Marvel movies.”
Navigating Pop Culture References
Acknowledging the challenges of avoiding allusions to popular superhero culture, Kripke admitted, “sometimes it gets tricky because you’re making so many pop culture references and so many pop culture references these days are about Superman, for example. But you’re not allowed to do that.” Outside of this restriction, the show aims to incorporate as many real-world references as possible.
Why No Marvel or DC?
The Boys has consistently satirized the superhero genre, particularly the dominance of franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Including Marvel or DC within the show’s canon would be unnecessary and potentially detract from its core message. The show thrives on parodying tropes, and acknowledging the source material directly would diminish the impact.
A Distinct Approach to the Superhero Genre
Unlike the more fictionalized universes of the MCU and the DC Universe, The Boys strives for a grounded, realistic portrayal of a world with superheroes. This approach allows for greater unpredictability and higher stakes. The series explores the corrupting influence of power and the corporatization of heroism.
Season 5 Premiere
The first three episodes of The Boys season 5 will premiere on April 8th, with subsequent episodes released weekly, exclusively on Prime Video.
