The Texas Longhorns continue to bolster their roster via the transfer portal, making a significant addition even as spring practice is already underway. While it seemed the Longhorns were concluding their portal business earlier this month, that changed on Tuesday.

Texas Lands 20th Transfer Commitment

Texas has secured former SMU Mustangs offensive lineman, Paris Patterson Jr., for the upcoming season. This move brings the Longhorns' total commitments from the transfer portal this offseason to twenty.

Patterson Jr., hailing from East St. Louis, Illinois, brings substantial size to the Texas offensive line, standing at 6-5 and weighing 323 pounds. He is expected to provide valuable depth for the unit.

Patterson Jr.'s Collegiate History

Last season, Patterson Jr. participated in 11 games for the productive SMU offense. His collegiate journey began with the Arkansas Razorbacks in 2023, though he did not see game action before transferring.

He redshirted the 2024 season after moving to SMU. Although he lacks extensive game experience compared to some older players, his eligibility could position him as a key contributor for the 2027 season.

Coach Sarkisian's Late Portal Move

Texas Head Coach Steve Sarkisian had previously suggested the possibility of a late addition during a February media session. Sarkisian indicated that the team was likely finished adding players but maintained an open door.

"Unless something crazy happens, I would imagine we're done. Never say never, though," Sarkisian stated at the time. It appears that the acquisition of Patterson Jr. qualified as the "something crazy" he referenced.

The coaching staff evidently did not anticipate bringing in a player this late in the cycle but recognizes the value Patterson Jr. offers for the future.

New Faces Joining the Offensive Line

Patterson Jr. joins a Texas portal class already featuring several new linemen. These additions include Melvin Siani, Laurence Seymore, Dylan Sikorski, and Jonte Newman.

The Longhorns have also significantly upgraded their offensive skill positions through the portal. Key acquisitions include wide receiver Cam Coleman and running backs Raleek Brown and Hollywood Smothers.
