Houston Texans wide receiver Tank Dell is diligently working towards a return to the field after enduring a significant knee injury last season. Dell underwent two surgeries to repair a dislocated knee, along with tears to his anterior cruciate ligament, medial collateral ligament, and lateral collateral ligament.
Grueling Recovery and Positive Outlook
The injury occurred while Dell was catching a touchdown pass against the Kansas City Chiefs in December 2024, abruptly ending his promising rookie season. Despite the challenges, Dell has remained optimistic, leaning on his faith, family, friends, and coaches like DeMeco Ryans.
Ryans' Confidence in Dell's Return
Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans expressed his confidence in Dell’s comeback during the NFL meetings at the Arizona Biltmore. “Tank, he’s grinding, great attitude,” Ryans said. “Don’t know if OTA’s he’ll be there, but I know he’ll back for us at some point this year. It’s not about how quickly he returns, it’s just about Tank returning because we saw what Tank can do.”
Ryans emphasized the importance of Dell returning in optimal physical condition, prioritizing long-term health over a rushed return to organized team activities. He highlighted the significant impact Dell’s playmaking ability has on the entire team.
Dell's Determination and Support System
Dell himself shared his determination, stating, “I’m back, I’m feeling good right now. Once the season comes, I’m gonna cook up.” He acknowledged the difficulty of being sidelined for an entire season, a first in his football career.
Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud was deeply affected by Dell’s injury and has been a strong source of support. Dell reciprocated this support for Stroud, who faced criticism following his performance in the playoffs. “People can say what they want about seven, but everybody knows who seven is,” Dell stated, referring to Stroud.
Team Support and 2025 Expectations
General Manager Nick Caserio noted Dell’s hard work and positive attitude, anticipating his availability for the offseason program. The Texans missed Dell’s presence as a dangerous slot receiver, particularly his route running and explosiveness.
While Dell attempted a return towards the end of the 2024 season, it was deemed too early. He is now focused on a healthy comeback for the 2025 season, bolstered by the support of the entire Texans organization.
