Penn State’s 2027 recruiting class is undergoing a significant rebuild, spearheaded by former interim head coach Terry Smith. Coach Matt Campbell identified retaining Smith as a top priority upon his arrival, recognizing his crucial role in attracting talent to the program.
Recent Recruiting Success
On Wednesday, the Nittany Lions received their third commitment in as many days with 3-star cornerback Ka’ron Ceaser announcing his decision to join the team. Notably, Ceaser is the third cornerback commitment for the 2027 class.
Smith's Key Role
All three players currently committed to Penn State’s 2027 class were primarily recruited by Terry Smith, who also serves as the program’s cornerbacks coach. Smith has been actively visiting prospects, including trips to Florida for Robinson, Pittsburgh for Gleason, and New Jersey for Ceaser.
Campbell's Confidence in Smith
Coach Campbell expressed his strong belief in Smith’s abilities in December, stating, “I really mean it. To work hand in hand with him, and knowing what it means to play here, knowing what it means to coach here, and knowing what it means to lead here, that’s huge for me.”
Ceaser's Commitment
Ka’ron Ceaser, a rising senior at Winslow Township High, chose Penn State despite receiving offers from several other universities, including Virginia Tech, Syracuse, Duke, Maryland, Pitt, Texas A&M, and Wisconsin. His high school coach is former Nittany Lions running back Bill Belton.
Leveraging Interim Experience
Smith’s interim head coaching experience has proven valuable in the recruiting process. He noted, “I think the big advantage now on the road is, more players and staff know who I am. If I’m in the south…I walk in the door, they recognize me now.”
He further explained that his time as interim head coach allows him to connect with prospects on a different level, offering insights into the program and the realities of college football. Smith led Penn State to a 4-3 finish in 2025, culminating in a 22-10 victory over Clemson in the Pinstripe Bowl.
A Genuine Approach
Smith believes his passion for the game and “throwback mentality” resonate with recruits. He stated, “I think a lot of guys appreciate my passion for the game…it’s a genuine and pure approach to the game in a time where our game is running away from us.”
He observed that many players and coaches appreciate his focus on the love of the game amidst the growing influence of NIL and the transfer portal.
