Tennessee School Bus Crash: Latest Updates
Nearly one week after a tragic school bus crash in Carroll County, Tennessee, questions surrounding the incident remain. The crash, which occurred on Friday, March 27, 2026, resulted in the deaths of two students and injuries to several others.
The Crash and Victims
The Clarksville-Montgomery County School System bus was traveling to Jackson, Tennessee for a field trip when it was involved in a multi-vehicle collision. What began as an anticipated field trip quickly turned into a devastating event. Classmates and loved ones gathered at Clarksville’s Kenwood Middle School to remember Zoe and Arianna, the two students who lost their lives in the crash.
Dashcam Footage Reveals Details
Dashcam footage obtained by FOX 17 News provides a visual account of the crash. The video shows the school bus briefly crossing the double yellow line and entering the opposite lane of traffic.
Sequence of Events
Shortly after entering the opposing lane, the bus collided with a Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) truck, which subsequently caught fire. The bus then veered off the road and impacted a tree. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is currently conducting an independent investigation into the cause of the crash.
Investigation and Driver's Health
Both the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) and the NTSB are investigating the incident, but have not yet released details regarding the cause. FOX 17 News spoke with a family member of the school bus driver, who requested anonymity.
The family member stated the driver, Ducksworth, has a history of high blood pressure and previously suffered a stroke. Clarksville-Montgomery County School System (CMCSS) officials confirmed Ducksworth had no prior disciplinary actions on her record and are fully cooperating with the state and federal investigations.
School Bus Safety Concerns
The crash has reignited discussions about school bus safety. Most school buses are not equipped with seatbelts. A 2017 bill proposing mandatory seatbelts on school buses failed to pass, with cost cited as a major obstacle.
Proposed Safety Measures
Senator Pody has proposed legislation that would not only require seatbelts but also incorporate lane-keeping assist systems on school buses. These systems utilize cameras to detect lane markings and can automatically steer, brake, or alert the driver to prevent unintentional lane drifting.
Community Support and Mourning
Students returned to school following the tragedy, and counselors, social workers, and school psychologists are available at Kenwood Middle School to provide support to the grieving community. The community continues to mourn the loss of Zoe and Arianna.
