Taylor Swift has delighted her fanbase with the unexpected debut of a new music video. The visual accompaniment is for the track “Elizabeth Taylor,” featured on her twelfth studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, released in October 2025.
Surprise Release on Women’s History Month
The announcement came via the Taylor Nation X account on Tuesday, March 31. The post posed the question, “What could you possibly get for the girl on the last day of Women’s History Month?”
The accompanying statement confirmed the release: “We have something in mind! The Elizabeth Taylor Music Video is out now on @Spotify Premium and @AppleMusic.” Swift, aged 36, also promoted the launch on her Instagram Story, sharing a brief clip overlaid with shimmering purple text reading, “Elizabeth Taylor.”
A Tribute to the Icon
What makes this video unique is that Taylor Swift herself does not appear in it. Instead, the entire production is constructed from vintage footage celebrating the life of Elizabeth Taylor, who passed away in 2011 at 79 years old.
The visuals incorporate scenes from several of Taylor’s classic films. These include clips from Cleopatra, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, A Place in the Sun, and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? The video also features archival footage of Taylor during public appearances.
Inspiration Behind the Track
During promotion for The Life of a Showgirl, the Grammy winner explained the song’s genesis. The inspiration stemmed from a flattering comparison made by Elizabeth Taylor’s son, Chris Wilding.
Swift recounted receiving a clip where Wilding suggested that in terms of persona and surrounding “chaos,” he might compare his mother to Swift in the modern era. Swift found this comparison deeply flattering and immediately discussed it with Travis Kelce.
The Moment of Creation
Swift elaborated on her reaction to Wilding’s comment. She spoke extensively about the aspects of Elizabeth Taylor she admired, particularly how the actress consistently challenged herself later in life.
“I had to get out of the car, I was like, ‘One sec, I have to get out of the car for a second,’” Swift recalled. She then sang the melody into her phone, concluding, “and that’s what it’s like when it happens.”
Wilding’s Previous Praise for Swift
Chris Wilding’s initial comment appears to originate from a September 2024 interview with The Guardian, where he expressed his admiration for the pop star.
Wilding, 71, stated at that time, “I can’t tell you how much I admire Taylor Swift. I’m now a Swiftie.” He specifically praised her actions following a presidential debate, noting, “That reminds me a little bit of the same spirit my mom had.”
In August 2025, prior to the album's release, Wilding told TMZ he was eager to hear “Elizabeth Taylor.” He described Swift as a “rare, positive role model for young girls.”
