Subaru Expands Electric SUV Range
Subaru announced its newest electric vehicle, the Getaway SUV, on Wednesday at the New York Auto Show. This launch completes Subaru’s plan to offer an electric counterpart to each of its four gasoline-powered SUVs.
Based on Toyota Highlander with Key Differences
The Getaway is based on the Toyota Highlander, continuing Subaru’s strategy of offering EVs similar to those of its part-owner, Toyota, but with unique styling and features. While sharing the same 95.8-kWh battery capacity, the Subaru diverges by offering only a dual-motor, all-wheel drive version.
Powertrain and Charging
The Getaway boasts 420 horsepower, exceeding the 338 horsepower of the dual-motor Toyota Highlander. Subaru will also introduce a 77-kWh battery option in 2027, likely for a more affordable base model. All models will include a North American Charging Standard (NACS) port and are estimated to charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes using DC fast charging or Tesla’s Supercharger network.
Enhanced Off-Road Capability
Beyond the powertrain, Subaru has incorporated its X-Mode drive mode system, designed for various terrains like snow, dirt, and mud. With 8.3 inches of ground clearance, the Getaway aims to provide respectable off-road performance, catering to Subaru’s customer base who frequently venture off paved roads.
Interior and Technology
The Getaway’s interior closely resembles the Highlander’s, offering either six or seven seats. It features a 14-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 12.3-inch driver information display. Subaru’s EyeSight driver assist technology, including adaptive cruise control and lane-changing assistance, is standard.
Competitive Landscape
Subaru highlights that the Getaway will offer more cargo space behind the second-row seats than the Kia EV9, a key competitor. Other rivals include the Toyota Highlander and the upcoming Hyundai Ioniq 9. Luxury three-row EVs from brands like Cadillac, Lucid, and Rivian also represent competition.
Availability and Future Plans
The Subaru Getaway is expected to go on sale later this year, joining the Uncharted, Solterra, and Trailseeker EVs. These models correspond to the Crosstrek, Forester, Outback, and Ascent, respectively. While electric versions of the WRX or BRZ are not currently planned, Subaru has not ruled them out for the future.
