British parents are being warned that many of the yoghurts their children eat are far from healthy, according to a new investigation by Action on Salt & Sugar. The research, which examined 104 popular yoghurt products sold across UK supermarkets, found that only two of those products were truly low in total sugar. The most alarming product was Nestle's Smarties Vanilla Split Pot yoghurt, which contains 14.1 grams of sugar per 100 grams - a figure that practically doubles the amount of free sugar recommended by the National Health Service (NHS) for children aged 4-6.Other high‑sugar varieties include Lidl's Milbona Fruit Duo Fromage Frais and Nestle's Munch Bunch Double Up, each offering more than 10 grams of sugar per 100 grams. At the other end of the spectrum, The Collective's Great Dairy Natural+Vitamin D and Yoplait Petits Filous No Added Sugar (Strawberry & Banana) lead the charge for lower sugar, offering only 4.7 grams per 100 grams.The NHS has long used yoghurt as a recommended source of protein, calcium and vitamin D for children, encouraging daily intakes of at least 350 millilitres of dairy or dairy‑derived foods. However, the study highlighted that the excessive added sugars in many yoghurts drive the risk of tooth decay and contribute to empty calorie consumption that undermines healthy growth.Dr Kawther Hashem, the research lead at Action on Salt & Sugar, points out that the sugar content analysed includes both added sugars, fruit purees and fruit juices - the free sugars that are most detrimental to child health. Even the so‑called "natural" or "no added sugar" labels can be misleading for parents, because the research estimates that roughly 3.8 grams per 100 grams of total sugar come from naturally occurring lactose, indicating that any added sugar must be considered in the context of total free sugar content.The findings therefore support the call for clear regulation around child‑appealing packaging, such as cartoon characters and bright colours, which can mislead parents into assuming healthier options."Parents should not have to choose between providing nutritious foods and avoiding excessive sugar in products specifically marketed for children," Dr Hashem said. The group is urging government intervention to enforce stricter sugar limits across all children's food categories, and to reserve child‑friendly packaging only for products that meet rigorous nutrition standards.In the meantime, the best bet for parents remains to read labels carefully and to opt for lower‑sugar yoghurts such as the Natural+Vitamin D from The Collective or the No Added Sugar variants from Yoplait, which keep free sugars well below the NHS daily limits for the various age groups. This shift could have a meaningful impact on reducing dental problems, improving weight management, and fostering healthier dietary habits from an early age.The study's broader implications extend beyond yoghurts, into how the food industry markets sugary products to children and the need for stricter scientific oversight in determining what constitutes a "healthy" child diet. As the NHS continues to refine dietary guidelines and as schools consider healthier snack options, this research offers concrete evidence that even seemingly innocuous snacks can carry hidden sugar loads.The next step will be for policymakers to act on these findings and for manufacturers to adjust formulations, thereby ensuring that the foods advertised to children are truly nutritional friends rather than sugar traps
