Smith appeared on The View on Wednesday and refused to apologize for meeting President Donald Trump at a White House dinner, saying he will not back down from talking to the president. Stephen A. Smith appeared on The View on Wednesday and defended his trip to the White House to meet President Donald Trump, telling the co-hosts he would not apologize for sitting down with the president. The sports commentator attended a dinner with Trump, comedian Bill Maher and Kid Rock at the White House on Oct. 15. Co-host Sunny Hostin questioned whether the meeting accomplished anything. She asked Smith, He has this history of racial bias that is so clear. Did you think meeting with him, that you got anywhere?Smith replied, I do not know. We will find out, but he is the president of the United States, and I will be damned if I am not going to try. He added, And the reality is I am just speaking from a constitutional perspective in that regard. He also said, And it points to a bigger issue. There are so many people that have this mentality, Why even waste time talking to him? Whether you like him or not, he is the president of the United States of America. He is not going away until 2028. At least.Stephen A. Smith Predicts GOP Senate LossHe is not going away. Smith predicted political consequences for Republicans. He said, I think you are going to have a situation where the Republicans are going to maintain the Senate. They will probably lose the House. So, you will get folks to impeach him, but then they will step in and save him, and it will be an ongoing continuous thing. He continued, And do not get me started with that because I get disgusted with all that pomp and circumstance. I am so sick and tired of us acting like that is going to do something. He is not going away until 2028.You are going to have to deal with him. Smith said, And when it comes to getting things done, I am all about exhausting every means and every measure to try to do what is in the best interest of our community. I am not apologizing for that to anybody. The co-hosts told Smith they had invited Trump onto the show, but on Tuesday co-host Ana Navarro said there was no way in hell she would meet with the president.Smith Defends White House Meeting on JobsSmith also addressed critics Tuesday, saying, Let me tell yall something. I am not apologizing for this. Smith addressed economic concerns and unemployment. He said, Affordability is an issue, jobs have been lost, Black unemployment has risen.I ain't happy about it, not by a long shot. And I think that when you take into account those kinds of things, it is a very uncomfortable thing to watch, which is why I was looking forward to meeting up with him. He added, But for those that felt like there is no way on Earth that you should have spoken to the president of the United States, I am like, Have yall lost your mind?Smith also noted that Trump was defiant when met with criticism. In a previous special edition of his show, Smith said Trump accused him of being nasty and mean. Smith said, When he finally saw me, he accused me of being nasty and mean to him because obviously, contrary to what some of you may want to recognize, I have been critical of the president. Smith had initially described the White House affair as pleasant. He told listeners last week it was ultimately a very substantive evening. He said Trump could not have been nicer and more complimentary, even toward somebody whose aptitude he just questioned weeks ago. The ESPN host said he pressed Trump several times regarding the war in Iran and added that Maher grilled the president during the meeting as well.Smith Highlights Pushback Against TrumpSmith said, The only other thing I would add is I am kind of disappointed that you are asking whether or not I pushed back because that shows me that you are not watching my SiriusXM show enough because I push back on Trump all the time. Kid Rock also commented on the dinner. Asked how it went, Kid Rock said the group had a great conversation. He said, It was epic. And the thing that was the greatest, there is so many points, I could do an hour on it, is that, you know, two Democrats, two Republicans sit down, break bread, have laughs, talk about, have tough conversations on a lot of the issues. Nicholas Fondacaro, associate editor of the Media Research Center's NewsBusters, told Fox News Digital, It is easy for the cast of The View to attack people for meeting with President Trump or crow about how they would never take a meeting with him. One, they will never be asked. Two, they are not counted on by anyone to be a champion of their cause. Fondacaro continued, It is clear that The View truly believe him to be the bumbling racist caricature that they and the rest of the liberal media paint him to be to their viewers. They were visibly shocked to learn that Trump seemed to hear him out and called him a few days later to hear his argument again before he met with others about the HBCUs issue. In June, Smith suggested his presence at the NBA Finals could lead to a loss by the red-hot New York Knicks.
