Ongoing Dialogue Between McCarthy and Rodgers

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy has confirmed he is in regular communication with veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Speaking at the 2026 NFL Annual League Meeting in Phoenix on March 31, 2026, McCarthy noted that he speaks with the 42-year-old quarterback every couple of days.

McCarthy, who previously coached Rodgers for 13 years in Green Bay, described the current dialogue as consistent with their past relationship. He stated that their conversations cover various topics, including life and team operations at the facility. McCarthy emphasized that Rodgers remains "really engaged" and is currently in a "very positive space."

Steelers Weighing Draft Options

While the coaching staff maintains a positive rapport with Rodgers, the organization is preparing for all possibilities regarding the quarterback position. Steelers owner Art Rooney II confirmed that "all options are on the table" as the team approaches the 2026 NFL Draft, which is scheduled to begin on April 23 in Pittsburgh.

Regarding the team's strategy, McCarthy highlighted the importance of a robust system for player acquisition. He noted that the team proactively discusses various scenarios for every position to ensure they can adjust as needed.

Rodgers' Status and Future

Aaron Rodgers is currently a free agent following his one-year, $13.65 million contract for the 2025-26 season. While there is uncertainty surrounding his future with the team, Rooney mentioned that Rodgers indicated he would not take as long to make a decision this year compared to last season.

Rodgers has confirmed he is in discussions with both McCarthy and general manager Omar Khan. However, the four-time MVP noted that there is currently no formal contract offer on the table and no set deadline for a final decision.
