Starship Simulator Brings Star Trek Style Crew Roles to Steam Starship Simulator, an ambitious space exploration sandbox from Fleetyard Studios, lets players take on eight crew roles aboard a Magellan-class starship. A free demo is out now. An ambitious new space exploration game called Starship Simulator is heading to Steam, offering players the chance to serve aboard a deep space vessel in one of eight crew roles, including captain. Developed by Fleetyard Studios, the title has drawn attention for blending the crew-focused experience of Star Trek: The Next Generation with elements reminiscent of the classic sci-fi series Stargate. A free demo is available now, though no release date has been announced. Starship Simulator Crew Roles and GameplayStarship Simulator is described as a deeply immersive space exploration sandbox. Players take a starship across the Milky Way galaxy, with real astrophysics behind the engine. The game is built on Unreal Engine 5, which the developer says enables massive draw distances and detail across the vast expanse of space.Players can control one of eight roles: captain, pilot, science officer, tactical officer, engineer, doctor, morale officer, and passenger. While the roles vary greatly, the captain handles most operations. Passengers have little to do beyond living with the crew and carrying out some lower-stakes tasks. The ship itself is a Magellan-class deep space exploration vessel featuring miles of cables and conduits along with a real structural framework. Players have unrestricted access to every deck and can interact with numerous fully simulated ship systems, or simply relax in the bar and watch the stars drift by.Crew management is a major part of the experience. Players must take care of more than 200 crewmates and act like an officer while sailing the stars. Exploration activities include probing samples from alien worlds, learning about extinct civilizations, investigating flora, upgrading the ship, and locating new fuel sources born from alien tech.Exploration of a Scientifically Accurate GalaxyThe game promises a scientifically accurate Milky Way with distant uncharted worlds to discover. If players find a planet that supports life, they can learn how advanced that life is, even down to bacteria. Much of this work can be done from space, or players can head down to the planet to discover things for themselves.Procedurally generated races come in different sets, some more aggressive than others, and each has its own society. The developer notes that many space sims offer beautiful ship interiors, realistic galaxies, or impressive simulated systems, but argues the genre lacks a title that features all of these together.Free Demo and Release PlansBecause the project is so ambitious, Starship Simulator currently does not have a release date on Steam. Players can try a free demo now to experience the game ahead of its eventual launch. The Steam listing gives fans of The Next Generation and other Star Trek series an early look at a title that lets them play as multiple crew members, including the captain.
