Starbucks Announces New Incentives for Baristas

Starbucks is implementing changes to its compensation structure, offering eligible baristas annual bonuses of up to $1,200 and transitioning to a weekly pay schedule. The coffee chain announced these initiatives on Thursday, citing goals to enhance customer service and drive sales growth.

Bonus Program Details

Performance-Based Rewards

The bonus program is tied to the performance of individual Starbucks locations, specifically their achievement of customer service and sales targets. Baristas can earn $300 per quarter, potentially reaching a total of $1,200 annually, if their store meets or exceeds these unspecified goals. The program is set to begin in July.

Shift to Weekly Pay

In addition to the bonus program, Starbucks is moving to a weekly pay cycle for its employees. This change is intended to provide baristas with increased financial flexibility and access to their earnings.

Company Turnaround and Sales Growth

These changes come as Starbucks works to revitalize growth and improve profitability under CEO Brian Niccol. Recent financial reports indicate positive momentum, with same-store sales increasing by 4% in the most recent quarter.

'Back to Starbucks' Initiative

Analysts attribute the recent sales improvement to Niccol’s “Back to Starbucks” turnaround plan. This plan includes the introduction of new menu items and a revised barista dress code designed to enhance the company’s image.

“As the company’s Back to Starbucks transformation continues to deliver results and an improved customer experience in Starbucks coffeehouses, the new incentive rewards program recognizes partners for the progress they make possible,” Starbucks stated.

Changes to Tipping Program

Starbucks is also updating its tipping program within the mobile app and for customers paying via app scan at the register. The company anticipates this will lead to a 5% to 8% increase in barista tips by making it easier for customers to add a gratuity.
