The immediate aftermath of St. John’s recent NCAA Tournament run has brought roster changes for the Red Storm. Just days after the team suffered a narrow 80-75 loss to Duke in the Sweet 16, team captain Sadiku Ibine Ayo announced his decision to enter the transfer portal.
Ayo's Decision and Connection to Pitino
Ayo is reportedly very close with Head Coach Rick Pitino. Sources indicate that Pitino has encouraged Ayo to explore his options, specifically weighing potential playing time and Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities elsewhere.
The 6-foot-6 forward initially joined St. John’s in 2023 after following Pitino from Iona. Ayo was part of Pitino’s program during his freshman year at Iona in 2022. However, a significant leg injury sidelined him for most of his first season with the Red Storm, limiting him to just five games.
Struggles for Playing Time
Since recovering, Ayo has found it challenging to secure a consistent spot in the St. John’s rotation. This past season, he participated in 30 of the team's 37 contests, averaging less than eight minutes per game.
As he heads into his final year of college eligibility, Ayo is aiming to secure a more substantial role on the court.
Coach Pitino Reflects on Historic Season
The team’s season concluded with St. John’s first appearance in the Sweet 16 since 1999. Following the loss to Duke, Coach Pitino expressed profound disappointment for his players.
Pitino described this specific group as one of the most incredible he has coached across his 52-year career. He recently extended his contract with the program for an additional year over the weekend.
Praise for Team Chemistry
During his post-mortem media address, Pitino lauded the team's unparalleled unity and selflessness. He noted the complete absence of internal conflict among the players throughout the year.
"This was one of the most unique teams I’ve had in 52 years," Pitino stated. "Never one argument amongst the players… They were willing to do anything to try and win."
He concluded with high praise for their character, adding, "They were just the greatest kids in the world. Never again with this type of attitude and just incredible people. My heart breaks for them.”
