Squad Democrat introduces bill to abolish ICE, Border Patrol and dismantle DHS Rep. Delia Ramirez introduced the Reimagining Safety Act to replace DHS with a Department of Community Safety, eliminate ICE and CBP, and close Guantanamo Bay within 60 days. Rep. Delia Ramirez, a progressive Squad member, formally introduced legislation to dismantle the Department of Homeland Security, abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement and eliminate Customs and Border Protection. The bill is called the Reimagining Safety Act. It would replace DHS with a new Department of Community Safety. The proposal would fundamentally overhaul federal immigration enforcement. The legislation would eliminate CBP, including Border Patrol, toppling the agency responsible for securing Americas borders and screening travelers and goods entering the country.Reimagining Safety Act abolishes ICE CBPWhile certain customs and immigration functions would be transferred to other federal departments, the proposal would eliminate CBPs existing enforcement structure. It would also abolish ICE. The Reimagining Safety Act would preserve several existing federal agencies. The Transportation Security Administration and the Coast Guard would be transferred to the Department of Transportation. The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency would move to the proposed Department of Community Safety. Original cosponsors include fellow Squad member Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich. , along with Reps.Adelita Grijalva, D-Ariz. , and Jim McGovern, D-Mass. , according to Ramirezs office. The bill would end border wall construction beginning in fiscal year 2027.Guantanamo Bay closure required in new billIt would require the closure of the military detention facility at Guantanamo Bay within 60 days of enactment. Congress would need to pass and the president would need to sign the bill before it takes effect. None of its proposed changes to immigration enforcement are currently in force. DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin criticized the proposal.Radical leftists are calling to defund the police and abolish DHS. Its NEVER going to happen. Our 270,000 DHS patriots are keeping Americans SAFE- unlike this open-borders politician who refuses to prioritize Americans over illegal aliens, Mullin said. A DHS spokesperson also criticized Ramirez, saying she should be thanking our law enforcement for removing these dangerous criminals from her district-NOT vilifying law enforcement.DHS Mullin criticizes progressive abolition planRamirez previously defended her proposal in a statement to Fox News Digital. She argued the current department should be dismantled and replaced with an agency focused on community safety. Every day, Americans wake up with a new reason to dismantle DHS, reimagine safety, and build something that honors our shared humanity, Ramirez said. The bill represents a radical proposal that would fundamentally overhaul federal immigration enforcement. The legislation follows calls from Democrats to dismantle DHS amid the Trump administrations crackdown on illegal immigration. DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin discussed those calls on Sunday Night in America. He said DHS does not pick and choose which laws to enforce. The debate over the future of DHS and immigration enforcement remains ongoing in Congress.Elizabeth Elkind contributed to this reporting.
