Sons of Anarchy Prequel Still Possible, Says Creator

Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter has shared an update with fans regarding a long-discussed prequel series centered around the founding of the SAMCRO motorcycle club. The original series, known for its complex characters and dramatic storylines, concluded in 2014 but has continued to generate discussion among viewers.

Sutter's Relationship with FX Executive

Sutter revealed his ongoing relationship with FX executive John Landgraf is a key factor in considering a return to the Sons of Anarchy universe. “John Landgraf and I were always friends while I worked with him, but we’ve become really close friends since I left, and that’s been powerful for me,” Sutter stated. “I know that he loves the IP, and I trust John.”

Timing is Key for a Prequel

According to Sutter, a prequel isn't being actively pursued, but remains a possibility. “When I know it’s the right time for it, and it all makes sense, that’s when it’ll happen,” he explained. He emphasized that discussions with Landgraf are broad, not solely focused on a single project. “When we have lunch, we’ll talk about the business and work, but it’s never about the pursuit of a single project.”

Exploring the Club's Origins

The potential prequel would delve into the origins of SAMCRO and the “First 9” members who established the club. Six of these founding members were Vietnam War veterans, including John “JT” Teller and Piermont “Piney” Winston. The initial aim of the club was to provide a sense of rebellion and community for disillusioned individuals seeking an alternative to mainstream society.

A Shakespearean Drama

Sutter described the potential series as a “Shakespearean drama,” exploring the club’s tragic evolution from its idealistic beginnings to a more corrupt and power-hungry organization. The show would examine the compromises made by those involved and offer backstory for dedicated fans. Sons of Anarchy, Sutter believes, provides a rich canvas for exploring complex themes.

Potential for New Revelations

The prequel would also offer an opportunity to subvert expectations and reveal new information about the club’s early days. Sutter believes there are “still some stories to tell” and expressed optimism about a potential return, stating, “I don’t think it’s completely off the table, but as things change, you embrace whatever direction you’re taken in.”
