A New Chapter for Green Bay

The Green Bay Packers have signed Skyy Moore in free agency, aiming to bolster a special teams unit that finished 20th in the Packers On SI rankings and 21st in DVOA last season. Moore, who previously played for the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers, views this opportunity as a chance to replicate the turnaround he helped facilitate in San Francisco.

“Me and my agent talked about it, more than anything, just of how I could come in and it could be kind of the same thing for San Fran,” Moore told Packers On SI in an exclusive interview. “My job was to come in there and help change that around. I’m going to look at it in the same manner of going in there, earning my stripes, earning my role and, hopefully, we can get in that top 10.”

Overcoming Early Career Struggles

Moore’s journey to becoming a top-tier returner was not immediate. As a second-round pick out of Western Michigan in 2022, he struggled during his rookie season with the Chiefs, muffing three punts and developing a sense of fear regarding the position. He shied away from return duties until he began working intensely on his craft during his third year.

“I didn’t want to be back there and it kind of created a sense of like fear,” Moore admitted. “Every time a kick would go up, I would be nervous. And then it came my third year around, I started working at it really hard. And then this year, it kind of took off and I felt very comfortable back there.”

The Breakout Season in San Francisco

Following a trade to the 49ers, Moore transformed into an explosive weapon. He finished the season ranked sixth in the league with a 27.5-yard average on kickoff returns and ninth with an 11.6-yard average on punt returns. His performance helped the 49ers' special teams unit climb from 32nd to 11th in the Packers On SI rankings.

Moore noted that his success was a collective effort, as teammates began to trust his ability to make big plays. “Once I started ripping a couple off, people started to buy in like, OK, like, we could actually go to the house with this,” he said. “We definitely started to get real momentum as the season went on.”

Looking Ahead with the Packers

After a 2024 season limited by a core-muscle injury, Moore is eager to contribute to his new team. The Packers, who have only seen one top-10 special teams finish in the last two decades, hope Moore’s self-made success will provide the spark they need.

“It feels great, honestly, just being anywhere where a team wants me,” Moore said. “Being where you’re wanted, it’s a good feeling. So, I’m going to go in there and do my best to give the team what they need.”
